Justification for direct award : The contract can be provided only by a particular economic operator because of an absence of competition for technical reasons
Other justification : The MSCL-S will vastly modernize and expand our core processing laboratory to include hyperspectral imaging and measurements of density and P-Wave velocity. Hyperspectral imaging can help to identify minerals, and characterize organic matter, and is rapidly becoming an essential tool for analyzing geological materials. Another key feature of the MSCL-S is continuous sediment density measurements for calculating accumulation rates, reconstructing depositional environments, and determining post-depositional processes. Density also provides information on basic lithology and porosity, which is essential for evaluating the potential for groundwater transport and penetration as well as for CO2 storage. Density can also, together with P-wave velocity, be used to calculate acoustic impedance, a critical parameter for the interpretation of seismograms from geophysical surveys. This will allow a full integration of seismic survey data and sediment cores, overcoming the problem of uncertain depth conversions from two-way-travel time in the seismic profiles. Geotek is the only company that manufactures a core logger that can be configured with the necessary sensors specified above in a system that can be installed in our lab and offshore. To the best of our knowledge, Geotek has had this exclusive status for the past 25 years, and their core loggers are installed in research laboratories of several of our close collaborators abroad. Our market research has consisted of online queries for similar products, visiting websites of several companies and research laboratories, and discussions with international colleagues in the same research field.
