For some schemes (Innovation Norway), it is sufficient to have "referral competence", for others - such as the Research Council of Norway's business programs - it is expected that the broker should be able enough to be a good guideline for the company. Personal qualities are also crucial, because a competence broker must like to work in development environments, and also dry to challenge in a right way. The competence broker must be able to communicate well, act professionally and have the ability to achieve trust both in business and in the research environments. An important success factor is to contribute to establishing a good trust relationship between the companies and the R&D environments in order to communicate "research life" to the companies. The broker can contribute to maintaining a portfolio by following-up businesses from a preliminary project to more enduring innovation work and a more comprehensive collaboration with the R&D environment with new applications to other financing schemes/programmes. The competence broker must also be able to use tools for idea development, such as project vaccination, be able to read a notice and understand it, and guide on building projects relevant for the relevant scheme.
