Anden begrundelse : The instrument will be driving a network of coherently linked high-frequency qubits and resonators, in order to measure and manipulate the dynamics of complex quantum systems in time domain and react in real time, to develop different strategies towards scalable quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing hardware. For this, the instantaneous generation of pulse sequences containing an unlimited number of pulses, with varying amplitudes, frequencies, phases, or durations, is an essential capability. Previously, we have developed real-time implementations of Bayesian estimation algorithm for qubit stabilization using related FPGA-powered technology from Quantum Machines, resulting in an improvement of the coherence properties of qubits. Because coherence improvement translates into a significant reduction of qubit overhead for the realization of quantum error correction, for the next generation of research and development we require real-time capabilities that can be expanded to a large number of qubits, leveraging real-time signal generation and measurement capabilities: • Fully programmable FPGA-based pulse sequencing via an intuitive open-source programming language • Comprehensive library of hardware-optimized mathematical functions implementable on the FPGA, e.g., for implementation of real-time Bayesian estimations and error correction • Ability to switch frequency and return by maintaining the phase coherence • Generation of pulse sequences containing an unlimited number of pulses, with parametrically and dynamic control of changes in amplitude, frequency, phase, durations • Control flow and mid-experiment decision making on hardware time ( less than 1 μs) such as conditioning or modifying pulse generation based on measurement results, realizing feedback latency on timescales suitable for the demanding requirements of quantum experiments Significant efforts will be dedicated to optimizing programming libraries and data handling, which we will do in tight collaboration with an identical OPX1000 system that has already been purchased at our institute. In particular, we require the control software to provide • Arbitrary control of sweep parameters utilizing FPGA -based control to perform parameter sweeps without time overhead, including parallel sweeping of multiple parameters • Availability of typical subroutines such as active qubit reset or mid-experiment frequency tracking on arbitrary sequences, and Implementation of randomized benchmarking protocols • Extensibility without support from hardware supplier The development of fault-tolerant quantum computing hardware at NQCP during phase 1 is intentionally qubit-implementation-agnostic on many levels, as we expect drastic advances in qubit implementations during phase 1. We currently cannot predict which qubit technology will be the focus during Phase 2 of NQCP. We require qubit control systems that are forward compatible towards quantum error correction and logic qubit operations using cryogenic solid state qubits with an increasing number of qubits. These systems must meet our needs during Phase 1, but should also be useful within a different mission in Phase 2. Unique capabilities of the OPX1000 system that are crucial for our program have been listed, and Quantum Machines is the only supplier that can supply a control system that is fully compatible with the 1st OPX1000 system that will be established at NQCP.
